REFLECTION
Experience
Before I started this module, I was pretty much clueless about what typography is about. I am glad to say that I was able to learn a lot in this 4-months-journey of typography. We were taught the history of how type came to be the way it is now, as well as the interesting facts, theories and rules of typography. We also learnt how to use softwares such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign, which was slightly overwhelming at first, but once we got the hang of it, it was pretty fun. I used to think typography would be kind of boring (since it's about words and all) but to my surprise it was quite interesting and required a lot of creativity. The way we could use typography to create art, such as through creating type expressions, formatting layouts and making our own unique typefaces was truly an amazing experience. Besides, really enjoyed how structured the class was, the instructions were clear and easy to follow, which helped me stay on track with my work. The feedback that we get every week is really beneficial as well for us to reach our full potential.
Observations
From this module, I realized that I have come to appreciate good typography more. I catch myself paying attention to the typography in the advertisements or any medias that I'm consuming, and analyzing the details of it. I've learned that typography really plays a huge role in our everyday lives. The thoughts behind how the words were designed and placed has such a great impact on how the message is conveyed. The size, angle and placement of the word, as well as the minor surrounding graphical elements all play a big part on expressing the meaning of the word and evoking the targeted emotions from the reader.
Findings
Throughout this journey, I've learnt that there are a set of rules to follow in order to come up with good typography, so that the reader can obtain information easily and comfortably. There are many details that we must pay attention to, such as the x-height, letter-spacing, font size, line length and so on. All these can greatly influence the readability and legibility of the type, which is a significant criteria in typography. These criterias should not be sacrifices for artistic purposes. That being said, to be a good typographer, we definitely need practice to develop the sense for it, so that we can balance between the artistic aspect and technical aspect of typography.
