Create a design work inspired by, or as a reaction to the design we analyzed in Task 2. Knowledge of design principles should be incorporated into our creation.

Rationale
In this sketch, it is a pattern illustration of a real fish is swimming among a lot of plastic rubbish that looks like sea creatures. The ocean is heavily polluted, the plastic fishes has taken over the ocean, there is almost no real fishes left, the fish has no choice but to blend in among them all. I'm using satire to raise awareness about the severity of plastic pollution. Emphasis, repetition, contrast and balance are the main design principles in this.

In this sketch, it is a children's storybook style illustration, showing a girl diving in the ocean in hopes of finding treasures, but unfortunately can only find rubbish. Using the cute style, I can reflect the sad reality of ocean pollution in a captivating way. Balance, movement, proportion and harmony are the main design principles used.

In this sketch, it is an illustration drawn in worm's eye view, featuring a fish that is devastated to find it's child dead, because it was unable to survive in the tough environment due to severe pollution. The close-up sad scene raises empathy of the viewer, which makes them pay more attention towards the issue of ocean pollution. Scale, proportion, movement are the main design principles used.

Rationale:
My final design aligns with UNSDG Goal 14: Life Below Water, which aims to preserve the ocean and reduce pollution. I created my design with the intention to raise awareness about the severity of rubbish pollution in the ocean.
The design portrays a real fish swimming among a school of fake rubbish fishes. The ocean is heavily polluted, it has been invaded and taken over by the rubbish fishes, there are almost no real fish left due to the harsh environment. Scared and devastated, the real fish has no choice but to blend in among them. Together they swim downwards to the depth of the ocean, which is already filled with more and more rubbish, only doom awaits.
This design aims to remind the public that action needs to be taken on the issue of rubbish pollution in the ocean, otherwise one day there's gonna be more rubbish than marine creatures in the sea. Additionally, the exaggeration and satire on the fake rubbish fishes calls out the irresponsibility of the public in disregarding proper waste management.
The design principles incorporated in my design are: Emphasis and Contrast - by using contrasting shape and colours (red and blue) between the real fish and the fake fish, it brings focus of the viewer's eyes towards the real fish. Repetition - pattern is made by repeating the fake rubbish fishes. Movement - the fishes move in the same direction diagonally, forms a path for viewer's eyes to follow. Balance - Rule of Thirds was implemented as I place the real fish on the intersection of the guideline.

Feedback
Week 6
After showing Ms. Yip my sketch #1 and my rejected rejected sketch #2 due to plagiarism and it being fictional (the main subject is mermaid), she said that she will need to see the renewed sketch #2 and a 3rd sketch before telling me which one is ideal as the final. However, she does think that sketch #1 is pretty good, there is slight satire in the design and it is quite interesting. But, I will need to think of an application for my design, whether it's a pattern that will be printed onto things such as scarves and bags, a poster, or editorial illustration etc. She also suggested that I draw my sketches smaller so it's easier for me.
Week 7
I showed Ms. Yip all three of my sketches, she appreciates that I still put in effort for my other 2 sketch even though I have already decided to use my sketch #1 as the final design. She agrees that sketch #1 is the most ideal to proceed as the final. Once again, she brought up the application of the design, she also told me about screen printing if I ever want to apply my design on any objects.
Reflection
Through this task, I was able to explore different ideas and hone my creativity. I wanted to raise awareness about the issue in a more captivating way instead of just usual posters. We were also able to showcase our skills in using the design principles through our design. I also gained new insight about how important it is to apply our design in various places / items (such as in a news article or on a fashion piece) in order promote our design and the message we want to convey. Overall, it was a really beneficial and fun experience.
