Experience
At the beginning, I was afraid that it was gonna be a very difficult module, and I didn't feel quite excited for it as I thought that it would bore me a lot. However, as I worked on my research, I realised it wasn't as bad as I initially thought. It was actually a very informative and interesting experience where I learned many valuable knowledge and skills in design and research. I personally think one of the difficult parts was choosing a topic, because there were so many to choose from. Ultimately, I chose a topic that I was genuinely interested in, so that I have the motivation and curiosity to conduct research on it.
The module turned out to be a very beneficial and insightful experience. I wouldn’t say that it was fun and enjoyable, though. It was a time consuming module that required a lot of effort such as thinking, reading, interpretation and analysis on our research findings, be it primary or secondary research. For instance, when choosing the articles for critical review, I had to briefly read through many articles in order to find a suitable one, and I've encountered articles that sound perfect but the full text was inaccessible, so I had to continue searching for other articles. On the other hand, while I was conducting the critical review on the chosen articles, I had to reread many times in order to fully grasp what the articles were talking about and interpret the important points in it. Not only that, carrying out analysis on the survey responses required a lot of time and thinking to understand what each response indicates. Nevertheless, even though it was a tiring process, the outcome was very rewarding as I was able to gain a lot of insights and knowledge.
Findings
Something I struggled with at the start of the module was narrowing the topic. After choosing my topic, which was initially just emotional design, it was too general and wide that I did not know how to proceed. Fortunately, Miss Anis advised me to focus on the ‘feel-good’ aspect in emotional design, and to limit the research area to just one type of website, to which I chose fashion ecommerce websites. After the final topic was set, I had a much clearer direction for my research. The research problem, objectives and questions came quickly after that. This shows how important it is to choose the right topic that is achievable when planning to conduct a research.
One of the fun but still stressful parts of the module was conducting survey research. I am actually shocked that I managed to reach the minimum number of 80 participants in the survey, since I thought it was impossible when I first heard that number, but through continuous effort to spread the survey link and reach out to people, I managed to achieve it. The responses are what makes it interesting, it was fascinating to see how many people perceive ‘feel-good’ website designs similarly and differently. It just shows that there is no absolute right or wrong in the field of design. No matter how good a design is considered, it is still prone to subjectivity.
Observation
I realised the importance of having sufficient information regarding our topic when conducting research. Upon conducting critical analysis on articles related to my topic, I obtained much more insights that helped me build my research problem, research objective and research questions. This showed me the significance of having a strong theoretical basis behind our research.
Through this module, I was able to gain extensive knowledge on the topic of ‘feel-good’ design in fashion ecommerce websites. ‘Feel-good’ design is highly effective in eliciting positive emotions from users, which can prolong their browsing time and increase their likelihood to purchase. It shows how crucial it is to achieve high quality UI/UX by implementing ‘feel-good’ design. It is definitely something that I will consider carefully for my future work. It also showed me how despite being a generally artistic field, design also requires substantial research to be able to reach new discoveries.
