TASK

Project 1: Mobile Application Proposal

We are required to create a proposal documentation for our mobile application project. We are then tasked to redesign an existing app that we find unsatisfactory in terms of user experience or its interface design. The proposal is then subject to preliminary approval by the module coordinator. The proposal documentation should include:

1. Introduction
  • Purpose: Revamp existing mobile app to elevate user experience and interface quality.
  • Stress the pivotal role of mobile app design in shaping user contentment.

2. Background and Context
  • Evaluate current app's design and functionalities.
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses.
  • Competitive analysis.
  • Gain insights into user demographics and requirements.

3. Goals and Objectives
  • Establish clear objectives for the redesign initiative.
  • Prioritize addressing current deficiencies and enhancing user satisfaction.
  • Define primary and secondary goals to align with user expectations.
  • Developing your design strategy
4. User Research
  • Detail methodologies for conducting user research.
  • Describe the methods you will utilize to collect user feedback and gain insights.
  • Devise a robust plan for user testing and validation.
5. References
  • Curate pertinent articles, books, and design samples for inspiration.

Mobile Application Proposal (Draft)

1. Selecting an app to redesign

For the first draft, we are to propose 3 apps for redesign, and then choose the most ideal one to proceed for our final mobile application design proposal. So i went around Google Play Store, looked for apps that I was more familiar with that has lower ratings and analyzed if each of them would be good for redesigning. I had insufficient phone storage so I had to keep deleting and downloading.

2. Creating the first draft for proposal

In the end, I chose Sephora, Gigi Coffee and Moovit for the proposal draft. This is because I found room for improvement in terms of the interface design as well as user experience for these apps. I did some basic research for each of the apps, and thoroughly read through the user reviews to find out their existing issues that most users struggled with. Then, I analyzed the main weaknesses of the apps by using the functions and observing the features repeatedly.

Final Mobile Application Proposal

Background and Context

Application: Moovit
Category: Journey Planner

Moovit offers a real-time journey planner mobile and web app to navigate public transit networks with GPS navigation across transit modes, including buses, ferries, rapid transit (metro / subway / underground, etc.), trains, trams, trolleybuses, ride-hailing, shared bicycle, car sharing, and scooters. Users can access a live map and view nearby stops and stations based on their current GPS location, as well as plan trips across transportation modes based on real-time data.

After receiving feedback from Mr. Zeon, I decided to proceed with Moovit, as I think it has the most potential for redesigning (just looking at the interface gives me a headache). I started to conduct research and gather information needed for the final proposal documentation. I also started reviewing and analyzing the app repeatedly to look for the existing strengths and weaknesses.

Furthermore, I made sure to read as may reviews as possible on Google Play Store to see what existing users struggled with within the app. Most of them struggled with the same things, which proved that there were a few underlying issues with the app that needed immediate attention for redesigning.

Then, I also conducted competitive analysis with a few other journey planner apps such as Google Maps, Citymapper and Mapway. Unfortunately, for Citymapper and Mapway, Malaysia was out of bounds, so I had to pretend to be in Singapore. However, that did not effect the analysis too much as I was still able to evaluate the user interface, navigation ease, personalization options, and real-time updates.

Goals and Objectives

After analyzing and identifying the weaknesses of the Moovit application, and taking into consideration the user needs, I was able to come up with redesign objectives and goals, as well as redesign strategies to enhance the overall user experience of the app.

User Research

Lastly, I also planned out the user research methods as well as data collection methods, which are through surveys and usability testing. Then I planned the flow map for user research, prototype design and user testing.

FEEDBACK

Week 2
Make sure the weakness analysis are more detailed. Remember to add conclusion for each app. Moovit and Gigi Coffee both works, it's up to you. Gigi Coffee was done by a senior, and for Moovit there's classmate doing, so be prepared for comparison.

Week 3
It looks okay. Use color to emphasize the key terms in the review, summarise the problem in same slide. Be sure to address the weaknesses mentioned in review  under the "weakness analysis" section.

Week 4
1. There are no potential solutions presented in your weaknesses slide.
2. The competitive analysis is unclear in the weaknesses slide. Screenshots alone do not provide sufficient elaboration on your competitors. I suggest creating a separate section for competitive analysis where you compare your app side by side with competitors and include a written analysis.
3. The main points listed under your primary goals should not be identical to those in your redesign objectives. Keep those points within the redesign objectives and create new titles for each point in the primary goals.
