The stop motion animation conveys the sadness and struggles the girl feels
as she leaves her home country behind to go to a faraway land. The coins
symbolizes her culture and tradition, as she lost the jar she thought she has
left it behind, but she later discovers that it will always be with her, in her
heart.
This stop motion animation helps us appreciate our own homeland and culture
more. The animation is really smooth and visually satisfying.
2. Negative Space
The stop motion animation shows the main character grieving for his
father through remembering about a moment they shared most often - packing
lugages. He also expresses his sadness never being able to spend much time
with his father through the metaphors in the animation. It is really sad and
leaves quite an impact on the viewers. The overall animation is done nicely
and it is visually satisfying.
3. The Kite
The stop motion animation shows a boy losing his beloved grandfather, when
visiting his grandfather's house again, he stumbles upon the kite that they
always play together. The kite brings him to the clouds where he meets his
grandfather again. This shows that our loved one never really leaves us, they
always stay in our hearts and memories. The characters are made up of layers
of papers, as they age they layers decrease. When his grandfather dies, his
last piece of paper comes of and he floats towards the heavens, I find that
interesting. The overall animation is cute and done nicely.
Exercise
We were divided into groups to conduct stop motion shooting practice to prepare us for our final project. We shot short clips referencing previous senior's works of clay and paper stop motion. We were required to use both camera and phone for shooting so that we can compare the differences. Through this exercise, we can decide our preferences.

Final project: Stop Motion Animation
Preferred Medium: Clay

Shooting Process
Shooting was conducted in Emily's house. We first created the clay characters and props. We mixed different colored clays to get the colors we wanted. Then, we set up the tripod, lighting (LED table lamp) and background (A2 paper).

Figure 3.2 Scene set up
Once everything was set, we shot the scene using phone camera through a stop motion app. It was difficult to move the characters and it requires a lot of patience and gentleness. There were many times where we accidentally knocked over or moved some of the props.

Editing Process
Once we were done with shooting, we exported the frames out of the app, then imported into Premiere Pro for editing. I was in charge or editing the timeline and frame sequence as well as certain scenes that has to be repeated or prolonged. I also adjusting the scale for certain scenes to be in different shots.

Then, we started planning and collecting the audios needed such as sound dubs and sound effects. I was in charge of collecting sound effects while Emily was in charge of the dubbing, where she got her little sister help since she has a cute voice. Emily was also in charge of choosing the background music.

Moving on, Emily imported then adjusted the audios and sound effects to match the scenes. Certain issues were faced because we initially used a team project. For instance, we would lose all media, or we weren't able to see each other's edits. Fortunately, it was all resolvable, and I converted it into a local project to finish it up.

Lastly, I added the ending picture with title captions. After making some final refinements, the stop motion was ready to be exported.

Final Stop Motion Animation
Heartstrings of Sisterhood by Emily Goh & Teo Mei Hui
In this task, I was able to explore the field of stop motion animation. There are so many ways interesting mediums and materials that can be used to produce stop motion, all of them gives a different aesthetic. It was really fun to work on the proposal with my partner Emily, where we shared our ideas on the storyline, the visual designs and color themes. Fortunately, we quickly agreed and decided on the final idea since we have similar ideas and preferences. We enjoyed making the clay characters and props together since they turned out so cute. The process of shooting each frames was the most difficult but luckily we were able to work together and assist each other. The editing process was fast since we had experience accumulated throughout this semester. Me and Emily's hardworking paid off and the final outcome turned out satisfactory.
