REFLECTION
Experience
Throughout this module, I encountered many tasks which I thought were considerably difficult but still a valuable experience. For instance, we were tasked to create layouts using the 8 typographic system, where we had to be creative while to abiding to the guides and rules of the system, it was tough but fun at the same time. We also had to create a font out of a pattern of an image, which allowed me to discover the possibilities of type design in many different things. On the other hand, we had to use letters to create a key artwork that represents our identity, which is an artwork but still has to maintain the legibility of a font, it was not easy to balance the two criteria and I had to push my creativity to finally create a key art I was satisfied with. Expanding the key art's identity was an enjoyable process too, I explored many ways to design the expansion. Moving on, the final task was the most difficult one, where we had to create a font of our own, it was a long and tedious process which required a lot of research as well as trial and error in order to produce a legible and aesthetically pleasing font. I felt a sense of accomplishment when I finally completed the font, it was definitely a rewarding process to design the font presentation and applications as I watched my font 'come to life'. Overall, this module was an amazing learning experience and I am proud to complete the module.
Observation
From this module, I learned to have confidence in my own design decisions and judgement. We should not only rely on tutor's opinion and feedback but instead learn to make decisions ourselves, and it is okay if the decision isn't the right one. That being said, I've learned to allow myself to make mistakes, as we can learn and improve from them. In this module, I had the tendency to overthink about the design and be afraid of making mistakes or imperfections, which led to me being stuck and unable to show progress, ultimately hindering the design process. Hence, I believe I was not able to reach my full potential for certain tasks. However, I believe I have slowly improved on this issue throughout this module. On the other hand, I realized that I take more time to appreciate well-designed fonts and layouts that I see in my everyday life, such as the menu of the restaurant or the nameboard of a shop, I now realize how much thoughts and hard work go behind the typography.
Findings
As I completed all the tasks, I have gained many useful knowledge and insights regarding typography. I've learned that we can find art and inspiration for typographic design in our daily life. Besides that, I learned about the significance of achieving unity and making the typography complement the design. Visual hierarchy is an important aspect in order to achieve that as well. Besides that, I learned that it is important to follow the rules and guidelines to come up with good typography, while allowing a little flexibility to add dynamism. Furthermore, I've learned about the importance of having a reference as we are still new learners in typographic design. Lastly, I've come to realize that in order to achieve a good final outcome, we must go though the process of trial and error, making mistakes helps us grow and improve even more.
